I found the answer to this question in The Shocking Truth about Electricity by Jennifer Swanson.
Electrons have a negative charge and protons have a positive one.You've heard the saying opposites attract.Well, that especially applies to electrons. Their negative charge is attracted to the positive protons.And it's this attraction that makes electricity happen. What do you think?
Show animations and explain that protons and electrons have opposite .... Since both strips have extra electrons on them, they each have extra negative charge

They are both subatomic particles. They both have a net charge. In an electrically neutral atom, the number of electrons and protons will be the same. ~!
